About This Course

This training provides social workers and other mental health professionals with a practical, real-world approach to navigating ethical challenges in their daily practice. Using case scenarios and interactive discussions, participants will explore key ethical principles related to professional boundaries, client confidentiality, and mandated reporting. This course will provide a structured framework for identifying and addressing ethical dilemmas, ensuring that professionals make informed decisions that align with their ethical codes while minimizing legal risk and prioritizing client well-being.


Designed for social workers seeking ethics credits, this training will cover critical topics such as the limitations on professional relationships, expectations for safeguarding client information, and the complexities of mandated reporting. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to balance ethical obligations with legal responsibilities, particularly in challenging situations involving child protective services and vulnerable client populations. Kathryn Krase, Ph.D., J.D., M.S.W., Principal Consultant with Krase Consultant, is an expert on the professional reporting of suspected child maltreatment. She has authored multiple books and articles on the subject. She has years of experience consulting with government and community-based organizations to develop policy & practice standards.

Training Objectives

After attending this training, participants will be able to...

  • Explain the ethical code provisions as they relate to practice with clients/patients at the micro and mezzo levels.

  • Discuss the limitations on relationships with clients, as outlined in relevant ethical codes.

  • Demonstrate the expectations for keeping client information confidential in their professional practice.

  • Competently discuss with their clients the professional obligation to keep client information confidential.

  • Know when making a report to child protective services is required by law.

    • Appropriately respond to ethical and moral conundrums faced when making the decision to report by applying a framework to assist in the decision-making process.
