Somatic Interventions for Trauma
3.0 CREDIT HOURS
Course Overview:
When people experience trauma, it’s not just the brain that experiences it. The mind and the body cannot be separated unless consciousness leaves the body behind, but the body is still here. The body is in the present moment, and that’s where life happens. Trauma disconnects mind and body. Trauma makes the mind believe the body is an unsafe place to exist. Trauma sows seeds of distrust between the mind and the body.
Somatic interventions for trauma focuses on the use of trauma-informed care (empowerment, trust, safety) to reunite mind and body, so that the body becomes a sanctuary where the mind can rest. How does this happen? Slowly, and with a lot of permission and education. Breathwork is often the bridge between conscious and subconscious processing, and there are a lot of different breathwork techniques to try. This builds safety in being present with body experiences while also promoting trust and empowerment in the ability to use effective tools to get a desired result whether that’s focus, grounding, mental clarity, or motivation.
Dr. Markoff’s style is rooted in the balance of empirical foundations and practical application. Expect to learn about somatic therapy, trauma and trauma-informed care, and traditional mindfulness while also applying practices of breathwork, visualization, and movement.
