CE Credit and License Renewal Information Page

Vermont accepts Elevate CE's credits for social workers.

Elevate Continuing Education, #1816, formerly Maryland CEU Institute is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.

2026 License Renewal Information

Renewal Deadline: January 31 (even numbered years)

Renewal Frequency: Every 2 Years (even years)

How many CEs do Vermont social workers need for license renewal? 

  • Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW):  10 Total CE Hours every two Years

  • Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW):  20 Total CE Hours every two Years

SPECIAL TOPIC REQUIREMENTS (required for all licensure levels)

  • 1.5 Hours in Ethics

  • 1 Hour related to systematic oppression and anti-oppressive practice, or related areas ("Cultural Competency"). *This is a new requirement beginning with the 2026 renewal.

Can I take my CEs from Elevate CE?

YES! Vermont social workers can earn all of their required CE credits through Elevate Continuing Education.  Elevate CE’s  Live Webinars  count as in person training for Vermont Social Workers (see more here section 3208 Renewals). 

Regulations state that “Synchronous virtual continuing education credits shall be approvable and accepted as live in-person training.”

Are there any course format requirements or limitations for Vermont social workers?

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSWs) in Vermont can complete up to 5 hours of their required continuing education through informal education. Elevate CE’s Recorded Webinars qualify as informal education and can be applied toward this limit. The remaining CE hours must be earned through formal, structured learning activities.


Are there any additional rules or requirements Vermont social workers should know?

Starting with renewals in January 2026, all social workers in Vermont are required to complete one hour of continuing education in the area of systematic oppression and anti-oppressive practice.

  • § 3208. Renewals
    (a) Licenses shall be renewed every two years on a schedule determined by the Office upon payment of the required fee.
    (b) An application for reinstatement of a license that has expired shall be accompanied by the renewal fee in addition to other fees set forth in 3 V.S.A. chapter 5. A person shall not be required to pay renewal fees for the years during which the license was lapsed.
    (c) [Repealed.]
    (d) As a condition of renewal, a licensee shall complete continuing education, approved by the Director by rule, during the preceding two-year period. For purposes of this subsection, the Director may require, by rule, not more than 20 hours of approved continuing social work education as a condition of renewal. Synchronous virtual continuing education credits shall be approvable and accepted as live in-person training. Continuing education requirements shall include requiring one or more continuing education units in the area of systematic oppression and anti-oppressive practice, or in related topic areas, consistent with the report recommendations from the Health Equity Advisory Commission required pursuant to 2021 Acts and Resolves No. 33, Sec. 5 for improving cultural competency, cultural humility, and antiracism in Vermont’s health care system. If the licensee is licensed in one or more other mental health professions under this title, continuing education units completed for one mental health profession shall count toward the required continuing education units for the other mental health profession or professions for which the licensee is licensed under this title.
    (e) The Director may prescribe, by rule, reinstatement standards for persons wishing to resume practice after five years since holding an active license. (Added 1985, No. 253 (Adj.
