In part I of this two-hour training, participants will learn about the lived experience of LGBTQ+ people, research-supported best practices, and how they can better support the LGBTQ+ community as an active ally. The course begins with discussing sexual orientation and gender identity, including important LGBTQ terminology. Next it will touch on how to create a positive and welcoming environment in your organization or practice. Finally LGBTQ+ allyship best practices will be discussed with specific examples and recommendations.

Part II of the training will take you through the ins and outs of understanding gender pronouns and why they’re important. The presenter will discuss the history of gender pronouns and give examples of the uses of gender-inclusive pronouns. Gender pronoun best practices will be discussed and gender-neutral pronoun practice activities will be provided.

Gregory Brightbill, EdD, MBA

Dr. Gregory A. Brightbill (pronouns he/they) is a servant leader with extensive experience in higher education, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and non-profit leadership. Dr. Brightbill believes that advocacy, learning, and personal growth cannot occur in a vacuum and that allyship and social change require empathy, relationships, dedication, and action.

In their professional work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Dr. Brightbill serves in student affairs supporting the educational, professional, and identity-based needs of health and human services students pursuing graduate and professional degrees. Outside of his role at UMB, Dr. Brightbill is the owner of Bright Baltimore, LLC, a training and consulting company located in Baltimore, Maryland, specializing in LGBTQ+ advocacy and leadership, and serves on the Board of Directors for GLSEN (pronounced Glisen) Maryland, which is an education and advocacy organization specializing in the needs of k-12 Queer youth in Maryland Schools. In other areas of his life, Dr. Brightbill continues to be a passionate thought leader in education and LGBTQ+ activism, publishing op-eds supporting LGBTQ+ rights and being locally featured as an expert on issues and legislation impacting LGBTQ+ people and higher education.

CE and Course Completion Requirements:

To earn the full CE Credit Hours and successfully complete this course participants are required to: 

  1. Enroll in the course and complete the attendee attestation at the start of the course.

  2. Watch course videos in full and in order and complete course activities.

  3. Receive a passing score of at least 80% on all course quizzes. Quizzes may be retaken by participants.

  4. Complete the required course evaluation at the conclusion of the course. 

  5. A code will be sent to participants who have completed the course and the evaluation. Using this code participants must complete the final Code Quiz at the end of the training to receive their certificate.
